Free College Essays - Chaos in The Sound and the Fury :: Sound and the Fury Essays
The Sound and the Fury - Chaos A key theme in William Faulknerââ¬â¢s novel The Sound and the Fury is the deterioration of the Compson family. May Brown focuses on this theme and explains that Quentin is the best character to relate the story of a family torn apart byâ⬠helplessness, perversion, and selfishness.â⬠In his section, there is a paradoxical mixture of order and chaos which portrays the crumbling world that is the core of this novel. The most important element in Quentinââ¬â¢s section is his obsession with time. To Quentin. time is torturous and destructive. He blames time for his loss of Caddy to sin and hence for his own suffering. Quentin becomes obsessed with avoiding time and attempts to avoid all implements which tell time. When he realizes that he has about as much chance of escaping time as stopping Caddy from losing her virginity, he tries to defeat time by destroying himself Therefore, at the end of his section, he commits suicide. Another significant element to look at in Quentinââ¬â¢s section is his imagery. For one, ââ¬Å"the mirrorâ⬠constantly creeps up in Quentinââ¬â¢s mind and is a symbol of Quentinââ¬â¢s inability to look at Caddyââ¬â¢s marriage directly. Moreover, Quentin always sees Caddy as ââ¬Å" confined ââ¬Å"in the mirror because this is his illusion of her childhood purity. He cannot accept that she has crossed the threshold into maturity. Doors are another important image in Quentinââ¬â¢s section. They portray Caddyââ¬â¢s actual entry into the world of maturity - a notion which Quentin refuses to accept. Water, as well, is alluded to often. It represents Quentinââ¬â¢s understanding of the knowledge of good and evil which he constantly tries to deny and his obsessions with sex and mortality. It is in water that Quentin finally decides to take his own life. Throughout Quentinââ¬â¢s section there are a number of grammatical errors, unfinished sentences, fragmented thoughts, and repeated phrases. These intentional ââ¬Å"mistakesâ⬠are an essential part of Quentinââ¬â¢s narrative. They help depict Quentinââ¬â¢s madness and the confused state which he is in on the day of his suicide. We see from his thoughts and memories that he has become just as cynical and fatalistic as his alcoholic father who says, no battle is ever won.

Strength of Mice and Men
In this story, although some people have great strengths, they may have greater weaknesses, and sometimes the strong donââ¬â¢t always survive. Strength in something can greatly benefit a person. For example: 1. Lennie is physically strong and large. He is able to work very hard because of his strength, and he uses this to his advantage. Slim said, ââ¬Å" By the way, what did you said about Lennie was absolutely right. Perhaps he isnââ¬â¢t intelligent, but Iââ¬â¢ve never seen such a good worker as him.He worked much harder than the other men this afternoon, loading barley on to the waggon. Nobody can work as fast as himâ⬠( itââ¬â¢s in chapter 6). Lennie also uses his strength to his advantage when he fights Curley. With his immense power he was able to crush Curleyââ¬â¢s hand. 2. Georgeââ¬â¢s intelligence. George is a very quick thinker. He is there to get Lennie out of trouble when he causes it. An example would be what happened in Weed. Lennie felt a girlâ⠬â¢s dress and didnââ¬â¢t let go, so she accused him of raping her, and sent men to lynch him.George, thinking quickly, told Lennie to hide in a marsh so that the men wouldnââ¬â¢t find and kill him. 3. Curley, as a symbol of authority on the ranch and a champion boxer, makes this clear immediately by using his brutish strength and violent temper to intimidate the men and his wife. 4. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is beautiful. Beautifulness is the strength in herself to flirts with all the men she met especially all the men in the ranch.5. Slim. Slim is the senior worker in ranch. So everyone respected him and his opinions. For example when Slim said ââ¬Å" Carlsonââ¬â¢s right. Your dogââ¬â¢s no good to himself. Iââ¬â¢d be glad if someone shot me when I was so old that I could hardly moveâ⬠. this ipinion makes Candy felt helpless and then he mau accept his dog will be shoted by the Carlson. (itââ¬â¢s in chapter 7) 6. Carson. He has the strengt h to shoted the Candyââ¬â¢s dog because he has a gun and Slim suporrted him. ( itââ¬â¢s in chapter 7)

Proper Disposal of Batteries
Todayââ¬â¢s common household batteriesââ¬âthose ubiquitous AAs, AAAs, Cs, Ds, and 9-volts from Duracell, Energizer, and others manufacturersââ¬âno longer pose as great a threat to properly equipped modern landfills as they used to. Because new batteries contain much less mercury than their predecessors, most municipalities now recommend simply throwing such batteries away with your trash. Common household batteries are also called alkaline batteries; the chemical type is important in choosing proper disposal options. Battery Disposal or Recycling? Nevertheless, environmentally concerned consumers might feel better recycling such batteries anyway, as they still do contain trace amounts of mercury and other potentially toxic materials. Some municipalities will accept these batteries (as well as older, more toxic ones) at household hazardous waste facilities. From such facilities, the batteries will most likely be sent elsewhere to be processed and recycled as components in new batteries, or incinerated in a dedicated hazardous waste processing facility. How to Recycle Batteries Other options abound, such as the mail-order service, Battery Solutions, which will recycle your spent batteries at a low cost, calculated by the pound. Meanwhile, the national chain, Batteries Plus Bulbs, is happy to take back disposable batteries for recycling at any of its hundreds of retail stores coast-to-coast. Older Batteries Should Always Be Recycled Consumers should note that any old batteries they may find buried in their closets that were made before 1997ââ¬âwhen Congress mandated a widespread mercury phase-out in batteries of all typesââ¬âshould most surely be recycled and not discarded with the trash. These batteries may contain as much as 10 times the mercury of newer versions. Check with your municipality; they may have a program for this type of waste, such as a yearly hazardous waste drop off day. Lithium batteries, these small, round ones used for hearing aids, watches, and car key fobs, are toxic and should not be thrown in the trash. Treat them like you would any other household hazardous waste. Car batteries are recyclable, and in fact, are quite valuable. Auto part stores will gladly take them back, and so will many residential waste transfer stations. The Problem of Rechargeable Batteries Perhaps of greater concern nowadays is whatââ¬â¢s happening to spent rechargeable batteries from cell phones, laptops, and other portable electronic equipment. Such items contain potentially toxic heavy metals sealed up inside, and if thrown out with the regular garbage can jeopardize the environmental integrity of both landfills and incinerator emissions. Luckily, the battery industry sponsors the operations of Call2Recycle, Inc. (formerly the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation or RBRC), which facilitates the collection of used rechargeable batteries in an industry-wide ââ¬Å"take backâ⬠program for recycling. Your big-box hardware store chain (like Home Depot and Lowes) likely has a booth where you can drop off rechargeable batteries for recycling. Additional Battery Recycling Options Consumers can help by limiting their electronics purchases to items that carry the Battery Recycling Seal on their packaging (note that this seal still has the RBRC acronym on it). Furthermore, consumers can find out where to drop off old rechargeable batteries (and even old cell phones) by checking Call2Recycleââ¬â¢s website. Also, many electronics stores will take back rechargeable batteries and deliver them to Call2Recycle free-of-charge.à Check with your favorite retailer. Call2Recycle then processes the batteries via a thermal recovery technology that reclaims metals such as nickel, iron, cadmium, lead, and cobalt, repurposing them for use in new batteries.
